Acupuncture and IVF: What New Research Tells Us

At Acumamas, we believe in science-informed care. While we honour the long history and wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine, we also stay up to date with the latest research in reproductive health and acupuncture. When studies emerge that help us better understand the role acupuncture can play in fertility treatment, we pay attention.

A recent clinical study, published in the Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2023, brings new insight into how acupuncture may support women undergoing IVF. In this post, we’ll walk you through what the study explored, what it found, and what it might mean for those navigating their own fertility journey.

A Closer Look at the Study

This randomized controlled trial was conducted in Turkey and followed 72 women with unexplained infertility who were undergoing a fresh IVF cycle. The participants were divided into two groups. One group received a short series of acupuncture treatments—one session a week before embryo transfer, another 30 minutes before the transfer, and a final session 30 minutes afterward. The second group did not receive acupuncture.

Researchers then monitored each group for pregnancy outcomes and emotional wellbeing, looking at factors like hormone levels, clinical pregnancy rates, live birth rates, and anxiety around the time of embryo transfer.

What the Study Found

The results showed a clear difference between the two groups. Women who received acupuncture were significantly more likely to achieve a positive pregnancy test, with nearly 64% testing positive for pregnancy compared to 33% in the control group. Ongoing pregnancy and live birth rates followed the same pattern, with better outcomes for those who had acupuncture treatments.

Emotional wellbeing also improved. Anxiety levels dropped by nearly 50% in the acupuncture group, while the control group saw only a modest decrease. Given how emotionally demanding the IVF process can be, this finding matters. Stress and anxiety have been shown to influence reproductive hormones and, in some cases, treatment outcomes.

Why Acupuncture May Help

While more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms, current theories suggest that acupuncture may increase blood flow to the uterus, calm uterine activity, and regulate hormones that are crucial to ovulation, implantation, and early pregnancy. Additionally, the calming effect of acupuncture on the nervous system may be particularly helpful during the emotionally charged days surrounding embryo transfer.

The researchers also noted that acupuncture may influence uterine receptivity, possibly making the endometrium more prepared for implantation. These physiological and emotional benefits—when combined—could explain the improved IVF outcomes observed in the study.

Limitations and Transparency

As with any single study, there are limitations. This was a small trial conducted at a single center, and it did not include a placebo or sham acupuncture group, which means we can’t entirely separate the physiological effects of acupuncture from potential placebo or psychological influences. Still, the results are statistically significant and align with other research and clinical experience suggesting that well-timed acupuncture may play a meaningful role in fertility support.

How We Approach IVF Support at Acumamas

At Acumamas, our fertility acupuncture protocols reflect both clinical evidence and patient experience. We commonly support individuals starting at least one week before embryo transfer, and—if permitted by the IVF clinic—we also offer acupuncture on the day of transfer. Each treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s fertility history, emotional needs, and clinical timeline. Our goal is to provide care that not only improves outcomes, but also helps people feel more supported, grounded, and calm as they navigate the highs and lows of fertility treatment.
